Parent Teacher Conferences
Hello All. Parent teacher conferences are on the evening of February 24 and all day February 25th.
They are 20 minute long conferences. I would love to chat with each and every family. I can certainly brag about your child for longer than 20 minutes but I am following the standards for the school.
Please do not feel that these conferences are mandatory. They are completely optional. If you have had a recent IEP or your annual IEP is coming up soon, then the conference may not be needed.
The following times are available:
Feb. 24
5:30 - 7:30 pm
Feb. 25
All day beginning at 9:00 am - 8:00 pm
Please email me with your preferred time.

It's Febraury!
Hello All!
I feel as if it has been such a long time since I have posted. My apologies. Here are some bullet points of important information.
There is NO SCHOOL on Thursday, February 25th and Friday the 26th! (I'm sending home new calendars with this correction.)
~For the Monthly Homework - Please work with your child to make Valentine cards for their friends. We will be working on this during class as well. You DO NOT need to also purchase Valentine cards.
Valentine Celebration will be on Feb. 12th
Thank you to all of you who sent snack in. The kids are enjoying the variety.
We finished up our dinosaur unit. We talked about large herbivores, small carnivores, and medium sized omnivores. The fact books came home on Friday. The students really enjoyed the unit. We ended the unit by becoming archeologists. We watched the video of the bones being discovered at OSU (Go Beavers!) and looked closely at the picture of the bones. We decided they were VERY dirty and the backhoe was very cool! Then we unearthed our very own dinosaurs from eggs. We used special archeologist spray to clean the "dirt" from the dinosaurs. We had to be very careful because bones that old are very delicate. Only two of the 10 students decided they wanted to be paleontologists.
We also did some great cooking in January. Dinosaur eggs (rice krispy treats with oreo cookies) and snowmen made from donuts. I am looking forward to some more fun cooking in February.
We are behind schedule as far as the curriculum that I'd like to get through but we'll make it. We are just beginning our solar system unit. The 5th graders will go into more depth of the system and the 3rd grade will begin to just touch on it. I love this unit and am excited to be able to explore the solar system with your children.
We have had a flu but going around the classroom which seems to be accompanied by NO other symptoms except vomit and diarrhea. There is also a cold virus going. We are sanitizing like crazy in the classroom. Remember to keep your students home if they have a fever of 100.5, a uncontrollable cough, vomiting, or diarrhea.

Happy New Year!
I trust you all had a wonderful winter break. We are off to finish the year and I am so excited! For the most part I am so excited - I tried to send this blog yesterday but technology is not my friend so far this year. However, like I tell my students, take a breath and try again. So - here we go.
First order of business - snacks. If you are able to send in some snacks for the classroom, I would greatly appreciate it. NO GOLDFISH PLEASE. We currently have 4 Costco size boxes of goldfish, so in case of a zombie apocalypse, come see me and I'll hook you all up with the goldfish!
Second order of business - the schools dismissal procedures are changing. Please see the schools website for the details. https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/schools/mckinley
We have started our unit on dinosaurs. The students are learning some big words, carnivore, herbivore, omnivore, biped, quadraped, jurassic, and triassic. This unit will take us to the end of January. It will end with some great science experiments and fun dinosaur themed cooking. We will then move to the solar system, Earth, and close out the year with habitats.
Studies have shown that students make their greatest gains between the first of the year and spring vacation. With that in mind, I tend to push the students a little harder during this time. I raise the bar on responsibility and independence expectations. I begin using the phrase "how can you solve that problem". For the first while, I walk them through the thinking steps to solve their problem and we extensively talk about what problems are and what solve means. We are doing that now.
I tell you all this because not only do I want you to be informed about what your child is learning and expected to do at school but also, they tend to be more exhausted in the afternoons.
I will be sending photos shortly of our December shenanigans. Technology and I are just off to a rocky new year! I'm going to have to hire my kids to help me! hehe
As always folks, I appreciate everything you do for your children at home. You really make my job a joy. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. Thank you all.

Some suggestions, Pirate booty, Snap Pea chips, pretzels, rice cakes (large or small), fruit snacks, or pop chips. We are also in need of rice crispy style cereal and marshmallow fluff for some cooking activities we will be doing.Second order of business - the schools dismissal procedures are changing. And yes - I am still praying for a little bit more snow.
